May is Mental Health Month
57.7 million people in the United States have diagnosable mental
disorders, including about one in four adults. The Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) houses a National Mental
Health Information Center. To learn more about various mental health
topics and programs, please visit http://mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/

Mental health problems are NOT a normal part of aging. There are several
agencies and organizations providing important information regarding
older adults and mental health. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's Healthy Aging Program has written two Mental Health Briefs
that are available to download for free:

-- Mental Health and Aging in America, Issue Brief #1
<http://www.cdc.gov/aging/pdf/mental_health.pdf>
This first issue brief reviews existing data and lays the foundation for
understanding key issues related to mental health in adults over 50.

-- Mental Health and Aging in America, Issue Brief #2
<http://www.cdc.gov/aging/pdf/mental_health_brief_2.pdf>
This second brief focuses on the topic of depression, an important and
emerging public health issue with several evidence-based programs that
communities can use to improve the mental health and quality of life of
older Americans.

SAMHSA has also developed a few documents available to download for
free:

-- Mentally Healthy Aging: A Report on Overcoming Stigma for Older
Americans
<http://download.ncadi.samhsa.gov/ken/pdf/SMA05-3988/aging_stigma.pdf>
addresses stigma and older adults with mental illnesses, existing
barriers to eliminating stigma, and strategies to overcome these
barriers.

-- Community Integration for Older Adults with Mental Illnesses:
Overcoming Barriers and Seizing Opportunities
<http://download.ncadi.samhsa.gov/ken/pdf/SMA05-4018/OlderAdults.pdf>
discusses existing barriers that prevent successful community
integration and suggests promising, evidence-based practices states and
communities can implement for older adults with mental illnesses.

The Older Women's League also has a Web site with activity ideas to
bring awareness to this issue. To learn more, please see
http://www.mentalhealthweek.org/
<http://www.mentalhealthweek.org/Welcome.html> .

Report - 2009 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures
The report, 2009 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures
<http://www.alz.org/national/documents/report_alzfactsfigures2009.pdf>
, provides a statistical resource for U.S. data related to Alzheimer's
disease. Information includes the overall number of Americans with
Alzheimer's disease nationally and for each state, estimates for
short-term and lifetime risk for developing Alzheimer's disease and
other dementias different ages. Caregiving data and financial impact of
Alzheimer's disease are also presented, among many other important
topics.

"Health AGEnda" - A New Blog created by the John A. Hartford Foundation
The John A. Hartford Foundation has launched a new blog, "Health
AGEnda", to stimulate discussion about how the needs of the growing
number of older adults are incorporated into the country's ongoing
efforts to improve health care. The blog will explore this and related
challenges and point to solutions as public and private sector interests
seek to reshape the U.S. health care system. Through their work, the
foundation's officers travel the country reviewing new innovations in
aging care, training, and research. The blog will share the knowledge
they glean and the stories they hear about older patients and how these
patients are faring in clinics and hospitals, homes, and nursing homes.
To view the blog, please see http://www.jhartfound.org/blog/.
